How to Install New Wall Sconces

June 17th, 2011 by admin | Comments Off | Filed in Sconces
sconces

Replacing dated wall sconces has an immediate impact and is a very cost effective way to remodel a room. You don’t need to hire an electrician for this kind of project. Electricity has to be respected but not feared. These steps will make the process safe and simple for you to do.

Common electrical wiring for modern houses is done with both two and three wire cables which have a copper grounding wire. The difference is that three wire cables are used for three-way and four-way switches. Two wire cables have a black, white and a bare ground wire. Three wire cables have black, white, red and a bare ground wire. Typically, the black and red wires are hot, white is neutral and the ground wire is exposed copper.

Turn off the power at the breaker box. Loosen the screws holding the plate of your light fixture to the wall. Gently let the wall sconce down until the slack of the electrical wires is taken up and the fixture can safely dangle. Keep your hands away from the wires. Now, test the wires with a circuit tester to make sure the power is off.

Separate the wall sconce wiring from the wiring in the junction box. Just unscrew the small colored wire nuts and pull the wires away from each other. Now, straighten out the wires coming from the junction box so you can tie them into your new wall sconce with greater ease.

Furniture Friday: Chandeliers & Candelabras « Carousel of Crowns

May 24th, 2011 by admin | Comments Off | Filed in Kitchen Pendant Lighting

I love chandeliers. I love candelabras. As far as I’m concerned, there’s no better way to class up your surroundings and give even the most modern abode a Victorian edge than with a classic chandelier or candelabra design.

The Scoop On Wrought Iron Chandeliers

May 20th, 2011 by admin | Comments Off | Filed in Wrought Iron Lamps

We here at ChandelierHeaven have noticed that if you are looking for a quality chandelier the word Wrought Iron Chandeliers will come up quite often. just what is “wrought iron” anyway? This is the topic of this post. Enjoy…

In a nutshell, wrought iron is commercially pure iron. in other words, it has a carbon content so low that is cannot be considered steel. This gives it the quality of being very tough, but malleable at the same time. as the word “wrought” is an old English word meaning “worked”, “wrought iron” can be considered to be “worked iron”.

Way back in 1925 an American by the name of James Aston developed wrought iron. He did this by pouring some hot molten steel into a container of cooler slag. This cooler slag caused the steel to purify into wrought iron. Eventually low-grade mild stee ... Read More

Table lamps from Schoolhouse Electric. « Door Sixteen

May 20th, 2011 by admin | Comments Off | Filed in Kitchen Pendant Lighting

I’m sure everyone and their blogger-brother will be talking about these new lamps from Portland-based Schoolhouse Electric over the next few days (or maybe they already are—I’m weeks behind on blog-reading, so I apologize if this is all old news!), but I can’t resist mentioning them as well because they are just SO perfect. Schoolhouse Electric is such a great company (we have their Truman sconces & Alabax surface-mount lamp in our downstairs bathroom, and their Benedict lamp in our bedroom) and their fixtures are top-quality. I can’t recommend them highly enough. They’ve just introduced a new line of table lamps, and these are my favorites from the collection:

Super nice, right? I love that you can choose from five differen&# ... Read More
